FLL Smart Move Image
FIRST LEGO® League (FLL)
"Smart Move" Workshop
Saturday, September 12, 2009
9:00 am – 11:30 am
Grades: 5-9

Location:
StenniSphere Bldg. 1200 Auditorium

NOT available for CEU credits

FIRST LEGO® League (FLL), considered the "little league" of the FIRST Robotics Competition, is the result of a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO® Group.

FLL extends the FIRST concept of inspiring and celebrating science and technology to children aged 9-14, using real-world context and hands-on experimentation. With the help of the LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ system, young participants can build a robot and compete in a high-energy robotics event specially designed for their age group.

Returning and prospective coaches and team members are invited to this fun and fact filled morning to explore this year's "Smart Move" challenge.

Call 228-688-3653 for more information, or email randall.t.hicks@nasa.gov. (For teachers and students!)

In order to attend, participants must register by Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Creative Computer Games Using NASA Resources
Thursday, September 24 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: 5-8
Creatively integrate technology into your classroom with interactive computer games. NASA provides a wealth of computer learning resources that are safe, fun and educational for your students. In addition to math and science skills, many computer games also teach reading and language arts. Helps meet state and national technology standards and addresses learning across the curriculum.

The Fascinating World of Weather
Tuesday, September 29 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: K-4
Learning about the weather is fun and interesting for all ages. We are constantly talking about and planning our daily events around the weather. This workshop will be an exciting day of hands-on activities using the sun, clouds, water, animal habitats, our seasons and other weather-related topics. We will also explore weather folklore and learn how to forecast the weather.

Family Science Night: A How-To Guide
Thursday, October 1 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: 5-8
This workshop will guide you through the process of organizing a successful Family Science Night at your school. Family Science Night is an evening program of hands-on science activities in which elementary school children and their parents can work together conducting simple, hands-on, inquiry-based, age-appropriate science experiments. Numerous tips to make your Family Science Night run smoothly will be discussed, and a wide range of fun-filled activities will be modeled.

Soar With the Courage of Buzz Lightyear™
Thursday, October 8 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: 2-5
What does the future of aviation and spaceflight hold? When NASA teams with Disney's™ Buzz Lightyear™, the sky's the limit! Come explore the history of flight, from the earliest pioneers, to NASA's next generation of rockets and crew vehicles. Buzz will guide you and your students through fun-filled lessons involving space travel and even toys in space. Along the way, you'll investigate the forces and principles that govern flight in our atmosphere … and beyond!

GLOBE Atmosphere/Climate Protocol
Wednesday, October 14 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: K-12
Scientists around the world are studying the weather and with GLOBE; your students can help too. Participants learn to take the needed atmospheric measurements to better understand our planet's climate. The measurements you and your students make through the GLOBE atmosphere program go a long way in helping everyone understand more about the world's weather. Registration for GLOBE training workshops may only be made through the GLOBE Web site at www.GLOBE.gov.

NASA Aerospace: A PowerPoint Lesson to be Learned
Wednesday & Thursday, October 21-22 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: 4-12
Microsoft PowerPoint can be a valuable education tool in the classroom. But many teachers don't feel they have the understanding to integrate it into their science lessons. This workshop will guide science teachers in the design and development of a take-home NASA aerospace PowerPoint lesson. NASA digital images, video clips and other needed multimedia resources will be provided. A basic knowledge of PowerPoint is required to participate in this technology workshop. This 2-day workshop, for 4th - 12th Grade science teachers, will be held from 3:30 - 6:00 pm each day at the South Hancock Elementary School, Room 411, 6590 Lakeshore Rd., Bay St Louis, Miss. It will be limited to 20 participants (science teachers only). Teachers must attend both workshops for CEU Credit.

Living in a Green World
Tuesday, November 3 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: K-4
"Green" is the term that many of us use when we talk about taking care of our planet, Earth. Come and enjoy a day of fun-filled activities learning how to reduce, reuse, recycle, preserve our natural resources and protect our wildlife.

Science in a Bottle
Thursday, November 5 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: K-8
How many different science lessons can you teach with a 2-liter plastic soda bottle? Participants will build a variety of inexpensive and creative science experiments that will engage students, motivate questions and lead to further inquiry. A wide range of science topics will be explored. Come to this make-and-take workshop with as many clean, empty soda bottles (of all sizes) as you can recycle.

Mass & Weight: What's the Big Difference Anyway?
Thursday, December 19 CEUs: 0.5 Grades: 5-12
"Mass" and "weight" are two terms with a big difference in meaning and often incorrectly used by students. This workshop will explore these two terms and demonstrate their difference with a focus on a recent education video filmed on-board the International Space Station (ISS) by the astronauts. NASA education resources and inquiry activities, currently in development from the ISS video, will be integrated into this workshop. Science teachers, come and be a part of "field testing" these new NASA curriculum resources.

How to Register
Due to limited seating, reservations are required.
To register for a GLOBE workshop, visit www.globe.gov as described above. To make reservations for other workshops, call the NASA Educator Resource Center at 800-237-1821 and select option 2, or call 228-688-3338. Please call between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Unless otherwise noted, all 0.5 CEU workshops will be held 8:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. National and state education standards will be addressed in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and geography in the workshops. For further information e-mail nasaerc@ssc.nasa.gov.
If you have registered for a workshop and are unable to attend, please notify the ERC and cancel your reservation so that others can have the opportunity to attend.
For security purposes, you are required to check in at the reception center located at either the north or south gate upon arrival at Stennis Space Center. A valid photo ID is required. Please allow sufficient time for this process.
ERC Registration Policy
Stennis Space Center ERC personnel consistently strive to ensure as many teachers as possible have access to SSC educator workshops. In order to maximize attendance at all workshops and events, please note the new procedures: Teachers may register for no more than three (3) workshops per semester and may only make registrations for themselves. If a participant is unable to attend a workshop, he or she must call the ERC at 228-688-3338 as soon as possible. Failure to notify the ERC of a registration cancellation may affect a registrant's ability to participate in future workshops and programs.
Safety Regulation
The use of hand-held communication devices (cell phones, two-way radios, etc.), is prohibited while driving on-site at Stennis Space Center.
CEU Information
Mississippi and Louisiana educators are able to renew their teaching certificates with CEU credits from approved workshops. Unless otherwise noted, educators will receive 0.5 CEU credits for each five-hour workshop conducted on-site. You must be present for the full workshop to earn CEU credit. The ERC now maintains all CEU records. The ERC issues a certificate of attendance when the educator completes a five-hour workshop. This certificate, along with any other CEU documentation, should then be mailed by the teacher to the State Department of Education at the time of renewal. To obtain a copy of all of your CEU credits, a written request must be sent to the ERC.
